PCGS Opens Gold Coin Submission Office In Shanghai

The Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) has opened a new coin submission, authentication and grading office in Shanghai, China. PCGS president Don Willis says that the goal of the new location is to “bring the world’s leading service to the coin collector community in mainland China,” and it appears as though all parties are satisfied with the new arrangement.

The new company, Collectors Universe (Shanghai), Ltd., is a wholly owned subsidiary of Collectors Universe (Hong Kong), Ltd. The Shanghai branch of PCGS now has the responsibility of accepting, authenticating, grading and returning Chinese coins of all sorts. The vast majority of coins that will be submitted to the Shanghai branch of PCGS will either be from the late 1700s through the mid-20th century or post-1970 examples of Chinese coinage.

PCGS first burst onto the scene in the 1980s and quickly made a name for itself as the top-of-the-line coin submission organization. A handful of other coin grading services exist (including one founded by the same individual who started PCGS) but PCGS perennially ranks as the coin grading service of choice for collectors and investors alike. With offices in the United States, Paris, Hong Kong and now Shanghai, PCGS is extending its reign of the certified gold coin industry.
