Gold, Silver Coins Surge as Sold Out Products Cut Choices

New sales figures released by the U.S. Mint indicate collectors continuing to exhibit great demand for gold and silver coins. Recent sold out products at the Mint have contributed to make exceptionally high sales levels even higher for the remaining precious metal coins.

Many First Spouse Gold Coins, a commemorative series that honors the role of the First Lady of each Presidential administration, recorded better sales. Additionally, the American Eagle Gold and Silver Coins that are still available for sales, American Buffalo, and America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins issued sharply higher weekly sales.

The 2012-W Proof Platinum Eagle, which the Mint just raised prices for amid demand and market values, gained 405 ounces against a previous 125. The 2012-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle gained 1,706 against 1,369. The 2012-W Proof American Gold Eagle Four-Coin Set surged to 1,563 against a previous 208 as the coins included in the set are no longer available for sale on an individual basis.

The four-coin set experienced its strongest week ever as the last of the four individually offered Gold Eagles, the $50 gold piece, sold out early last week. The 2012 Proof Gold Eagle reached sales of 14,848 ounces on an individual basis.

Joining the list of recently sold out products at the U.S. Mint, the 2012-W Proof American Buffalo Gold Coin sold out last week, gaining 463 and moving the total up to 19,765, the second lowest mintage in the series after the key date of 2008, which now sells for $3,600 in secondary markets.

Recently, after just ten days of availability, the U.S. Mint sold out of 2013 American Eagle Silver Coins during a spate of buying at five-year highs. The coin experienced it’s single highest one day sales at over 3 million ounces and sales continued at highs, bringing the monthly sales to 6.01 million ounces so far for the month of January.

A sales surge in the 40-coin rolls of the 2012-S Denali National Park Quarter rolls also produced a sold out product. The Mint’s new product line of bags and rolls containing circulating quality quarters with the S mint market garnered more collector focus as other designs sold out sooner than expected. The Denali rolls, the latest issue, were only available for less than three months.
