Australian 2013 Year of the Snake Gold and Silver Proof Coins Released

September 7, 2012 – Earlier this month, the 2013 Year of the Snake Gold and Silver Proof Coins were released by the Perth Mint in 99.99 percent pure gold or 99.9 percent pure silver.

The coins mark the annual debut of new collector products released as a part of the Australian Lunar Series II program, conducted by the Perth Mint of Australia.

The newest proof coins are available in several different sizes and are also available as part of a three-coin set. They all feature the 2013 Year of the Snake designs unveiled last moth as a part of the Year of the Snake bullion coin series.

On the reverse of the gold proof coins is a snake and bamboo design depicting the curling image of a snake at the center with bamboo shoots to the right of the coin face.

The Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark is also found on the reverse with the Chinese character for “snake,” also with the inscription “Year of the Snake” in English.

A similar image is depicted on the silver proof coins. The Australian Lunar Series II program features annually changing reverse designs which are emblematic of the twelve creatures prevalent in the Chinese zodiac, including the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig.

Those born in the Year of the Snake are said to be intelligent, graceful, charming, and independent. Past annual periods of the snake have included 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, and 2001.

2013 Year of the Snake Gold Proof Coins are offered in three different sizes, 1 ounce, ¼ ounce, and 1/10 ounce coins. The Perth Mint also has created a three-coin set containing the trio of coins.

The three-coin set is listed with a mintage of 3,000. Individual coins, as well as the three coin sets, are housed in oval-shaped display cases complete with a glossy timber-effect lid.

The coins include an illustrated shipper and a number certificate verifying authenticity.

The four different 2013 Year of the Snake Silver Proof coins released by the Perth Mint include the 1 kilo, 2 ounce, 1 ounce, and ½ ounce sized coins. The 1 kilo, 1 ounce, and ½ ounce proof coins are sold separately though a three-coin set is also available containing the three smallest sizes. The maximum mintage for the three-coin set is only 1,000.
