2013 American Eagle Bullion Coins Log Strong February Sales

Though sales levels at the U.S. Mint showed a slowing of sales of the American Eagle Gold Coins and American Eagle Silver Coins from January of 2013, sales levels during the month of February are sharply higher from one year ago.

January is typically a very strong sales month as the newly dated coins are released and collectors did not expect February to overshadow the record breaking sales levels of January. The year on year totals, however, continue to impress.

February of 2013 saw 80,500 ounces of the American Eagle Gold Coins ordered by authorized distributors of the U.S. Mint compared with last year’s February total of 21,000 ounces. The American Eagle Silver Coin, which was temporarily suspended by the U.S. Mint in order to replenish stocks, saw 3,368,500 ounces ordered from the U.S. Mint in February of this year, compared with 1,490,000 ounces ordered in February of 2012.

Buyers of the American Eagle Silver Coin were limited in their orders as the U.S. Mint has implemented an allocation or rationing program following the temporary suspension of the newly dated coins after just ten days of availability in the month of January 2013. January’s all-time monthly sales record at 7,498,000 coins ordered indicates February’s sales levels were down more than half, though certainly sales would have been stronger if the Mint had not implemented its rationing program.

Still, this February showed sales at more than double the sales of 1,490,000 ounces from February of 2012 as physical bullion buying trends continue strong.

January saw 150,000 ounces of American Eagle Gold Coins purchased, putting February’s totals at a definitely lower rate. January’s totals were the highest monthly totals for American Gold Eagle Coins purchased from the Mint since July 2010. Still, February’s totals are well past the 21,000 ounces that moved from the Mint in February 2012. Since October, monthly sales of the 22-karat gold coins have surpassed all prior year-over-year monthly totals.

American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coins minted in 24-karat gold saw February sales reaching 11,500 ounces compared with the 72,500 ounces from the previous month as sales showed their strongest levels since October 2009. Last year, the total sales for the American Buffalo in the month of February was just 7,000 ounces, again illustrating the pickup in physical buying trends.
