February 07, 2011 – America is in for a rude awakening and when it comes we will be grateful to have invested in gold coins to help us ride out the storm.

I had hoped that the European Union would prove to be an oasis of sanity and produce an innovative model of fiscal responsibility for other mature economies to follow. When Germany proposed such a model, however, the rest of the union went berserk. In the face of economic collapse, countries were still unwilling to make sacrifices. What German Chancellor Angela Merkel told the Wall Street Journal was intended only “to identify the best practices among the members of the currency group and to have others adopt them” turned the economic summit into a free-for-all that got nothing accomplished.

But that is how capitalism works. You create a distinctive competency through innovation based on lessons learned. It is not a one shot deal; it is a process of continual refinement up to the point where the competitive advantage is lost. Old tenets must then be swept away to make room for new ideas. Economist Joseph Schumpeter called the process “creative destruction,” and it necessarily comes at the cost of short-term sacrifice and pain.

We too have forgotten how to sacrifice, even though that is what made us great. We have chosen to live in the past while the government placates us with ineffective and ultimately self- destructive trade and monetary policies. But every day we wait increases the sacrifice we will have to make and extends the emerging economies’ lead over us in global economics.

Americans are too proud to take the back seat forever and we will once again rise to the top. But the sacrifices will be monumental by the time we take action. Gold coin investments will be the best medicine to ease the pain when that time comes.
