The Mexican Peso — a stunning tribute to Mexican independence
The Gold Mexican Peso, also known as the “Centenario,” was first struck in 1921 to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of Mexico’s independence from Spain. Two unique characteristics set this stunningly beautiful coin apart from typical bullion coins:
- 20% larger, 1.34 oz. with 1.2057 oz. gold content
- Edge not reeded but inscribed “INDEPENDENCIA Y LIBERTAD”
The obverse of the Gold Mexican Peso features Winged Victory standing before the Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl volcanoes. She clutches a laurel wreath in her right hand, signifying victory, and broken chains in her right, representing freedom. To her right is the denomination, and to her left the words “37.5 Gr. ORO PURO,” certifying the gold content. At the bottom-left is the year of independence (1821), and on the right is the year of mintage.
The reverse displays the Mexican Coat of Arms, the “Perforian Eagle”, resting on a cactus with a snake in its beak, encircled by the words “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.”
These beautiful Gold Mexican Pesos are widely available due to large mintages and several official restrikes of the 1947 date, and they carry very low premiums.
