French Gold Rooster — an affordable classic

The French Gold Rooster (Le Coq d’Or) was minted between 1899 and 1914; when vast quantities of the coin were melted down to help finance WWI. Coins bearing dates from 1907 to 1914 were officially restruck from the original dies in 1921, and then again between 1951 and 1960, providing an abundant supply of uncirculated coins.

French Gold Roosters issued before 1907 are rare (those dated before 1901 are exceptionally so) and are distinguishable by the inscription “Dieu Protège la France” (may God protect France). This inscription was replaced in 1907 by “Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité” (liberty, equality, brotherhood), from the French Revolution. The 1906 issue bears both inscriptions.

The obverse bears an image of Marianne, a national emblem allegorizing liberty and reason. Portrayed on the reverse is “Le Coq Gaulois” (Gallic rooster), informally named “Chanteclair”, a national symbol whose modern meaning of strength and courage also dates back to the Revolution.

The French Gold Rooster offers an unusual combination of historical classic beauty and affordability approaching that of modern bullion coins.
