The Liberty Gold Eagle — one of America’s most circulated gold coins

The Liberty Gold Eagle is classified into two types:

  • No Motto — minted between 1838 and 1866. The bust of Lady Liberty is depicted on the obverse wearing a simple coronet surrounded by thirteen stars. On the reverse, an eagle with a heraldic shield on its chest and wings spread nearly edge-to–edge, clutches arrows and an olive branch in its talons.
  • With Motto — minted between 1866 and 1907. On the obverse, Lady Liberty’s crown is more ornate and her hair is fuller. The reverse was completely redesigned with a smaller eagle to accommodate the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” above its head.

The Liberty Gold Eagle had nearly seven decades of continuous production, mainly at four mints: Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Carson City. These were joined by Denver at the end of the series, where the Eagles were struck only in 1906 and 1907.

The Liberty Gold Eagle series has an unusual number of rarities — there are over forty mintages of fewer than 10,000 coins — so it is particularly well-suited to rarity type sets.
