$20 Saint Gaudens

Arguably the most beautiful American coin ever minted is the $20 Saint Gaudens gold coin. Minted from 1907 to 1933, these coins contain nearly a full troy ounce of pure gold, and are named after their renowned American designer and sculptor, Augustus Saint Gaudens. $20 Saint Gaudens gold coins were actually the brainchild of President Theodore Roosevelt, who, after touring the Smithsonian Museum, decided that our nation's coinage needed to be more representative of the 20th century. He commissioned St. Gaudens, who designed Roosevelt's inaugural medal, to design a $20 gold coin that would rival the beauty of ancient Greek coins. The result was the legendary coin that bears the artist's name.

The obverse side of the St. Gaudens $20 gold coin depicts a full-length Lady Liberty, walking forward, and carrying a torch in her right hand with an olive branch in her left. The reverse side shows a majestic bald American eagle, soaring from right to left, with the sun's rays radiating upward from below. A great many of these legendary, beautiful coins were later confiscated and melted during the gold confiscation of 1933. Ironically, President Franklin D. Roosevelt (Theodore's cousin) issued the Executive Order 6102 that banned gold bullion ownership by U.S. citizens, so the gold could be used to back up our nation's dollar. Today, certified $20 Saint Gaudens gold coins are considered to be ideal long-term investments for financial security and potential profit. Coins certified by either PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service), or NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation), are also ¡°non-confiscatable,¡± as deemed in the Executive Order of 1933.
